Osteoradionecrosis (ORN) is a well-known but uncommon side effect of radiation
therapy (RT) for head and neck cancer related to high dose and risk of future dental
extractions. Dr. Kase will discuss how to assess patients who would benefit most from
contemporary treatment modalities in head and neck radiation. He will also discuss how
to appropriately treat patients post-radiation. Dr. Kase will also discuss contemporary
topics relating to osteonecrosis of the jaw and newer medications which pose a risk to
patients. Finally, he will present on the current landscape of Maxillofacial
Prosthodontics, traversing through everything from obturators to the Jaw In a Day
procedure to large facial prosthetics.

Afternoon Session

The Board of Dental Examiners of Alabama is proud to present the Alabama Dental Hygiene Program (ADHP)-Instructor Course! This 2-hour course is designed to prepare and certify Alabama dentists to sponsor a student in the ADHP course. The dentist will complete the course with an in-depth knowledge of the Alabama Dental Practice Act and Alabama Administrative Rules (Board Rules) as it pertains to the ADHP course. Additionally, the dentist will be well versed on the proper instruction and supervision of an ADHP-student and what he/she can do to ensure the student’s success. Lastly, the dentist will be familiar with all of the required documentation that is needed to
ensure the student is progressing through the condensed dental hygiene course and ultimately prepared to test for an Alabama dental hygiene license.
Information and Instructor Certification application may be found in the ADHP tab of the Board of Dental Examiners website: www.dentalboard.org .

Current Workflow of Digital Dentures

You have seen a lot of advertisements on digital dentures in the past 5 years. Is it time to consider incorporating either a digital or hybrid (Digital + analog) denture service into your practice? Significant amounts of literature have demonstrated that providing patients with digital dentures can not only save
chair time but also with better fitted dentures and less follow up appointments. During this course your concerns such as: “Do you need to change clinical procedures? Which lab to send in your case? Do you need any digital equipment such as: Intraoral scanner, lab scanner and 3-D printer in your office? What
is the bottle neck of providing digital dentures service….” Please join me and discuss about these concerns and share my over 12 years of experiences with digital dentures with you.

Morning Session

It’s Not Just About Millimeters Anymore: Current concepts in Periodontal therapy

The 2017 AAP/EPF World Workshop on the Classification of Periodontal diseases represent a paradigm shift in periodontal care. The staging of the periodontitis and subsequent grading of the progression based on systemic and local risk factors are valuable for periodontal therapy. This course will present an easy to follow path to the correct diagnosis of periodontal diseases, and the stage and grade of Periodontitis for your patients. This course will set the stage for personalized care for patients with periodontitis. The course will be a case based discussion on diagnosis and individualized treatment planning utilizing the knowledge and tools provided by the new classification to provide periodontal and maintenance care. We will answer these questions about your patients. What new innovations are there to control biofilms and inflammation in initial therapy? Which patients benefit from regenerative care, or advanced periodontal therapy? How do we identify these patients effectively? When do we know we have optimized the periodontal health and what are the endpoints for treatment?

Afternoon Session

Implant Maintenance Success

Dental Implants have become the preferred option for the replacement of missing teeth. The maintenance of dental implants has become an aspect of every dental practice. Peri implant disease require a great understanding if the implant system, the anatomy and the etiology to be successful in the management. We will answer these questions: What instruments can you use to treat and clean dental implant and abutment surfaces? How do we treat peri implantititis? This course will outline the prevention, etiology, and management of peri-implantitis.

Afternoon Session:

Chris Griffin, DDS

Chris Griffin is on a mission to spread the word about how practice automations can revolutionize current dental practice workflows. His strategic approach to implementing 3D systems through team delegation encourages increased productivity and performance from every staff member and takes the pressure off the doctor. Teaching other dentists how they can use 3D printing to provide clinical excellence while at the same time slashing overhead is a true passion for Chris and is the driving force of his message.

With FDA approval of new 3D printing resins that are indicated for use in procedures such as dentures and permanent crowns, general dentists have never been in a better position to give time-sensitive and affordable options to their patients. Proper understanding of this emerging technology not only give money-conscious patients esthetic options not previously possible, but also gives general dentists the opportunity to become a hero to patients who might have chosen less than ideal treatment. The goal of this lecture is to give attending dentists and team members the opportunity to walk away with the knowledge, tools, and strategies to start using 3D printing technology in their practices. 3D printing can be used to facilitate model creation, denture fabrication, surgical implant guide production, and more affordable clear aligner therapy options, plus many more applications that will improve clinical quality and patient satisfaction for general dentists.

Learning Objectives:

-Gain more control over their lab workflow
-Reduce overhead on many everyday procedures and tasks
-Diagnose today and deliver digital dentures tomorrow
-Bring clear aligner therapy in-house at a fraction of their current lab cost
-Learn the most cost effective way to set up their new 3D lab
-Quickly fabricate surgical guides for your implant patients
-Market your new 3D printing skills
-Greatly increase treatment acceptance on many larger cases
-Implement a step-by-step blueprint for implementing 3D technologies primarily using your dental team
-How Dr. Griffin paid off his initial 3D printing investment with SprintRay treating 8 cases in 21 days

An Update to Contemporary Dental Materials

New ceramic materials have changed the way we practice dentistry by offering a strong, esthetic and affordable restorative option for our patients. But ceramic materials do not handle the same as metal-based restorations and improper selection or handling can lead to premature failure. This course will teach you how to select and handle different types of ceramic materials that are currently used in dentistry that will be much less confusing than typical marketing rhetoric. We will review the best clinical practices based on research studies conducted at the UAB School of Dentistry and provide pearls for you to take back to the office.
Course objectives:
Review the different types of dental ceramic materials
Choosing a ceramic material for anterior restorations
Preparation and design considerations for posterior crowns and bridges
Strategies to adjust, polish and cut off ceramic crowns
Learn how to bond lithium disilicate and zirconia crowns

Materials and Techniques to Improve Your Direct Adhesive Dentistry

Posterior composite restorations remain the bread and butter procedure of many restorative dentists. Although this procedure may seem trivial, there are many clinical factors which lead to a long-lasting restoration, including diagnosis, isolation, caries removal, cavity preparation, use of liner, matrix and wedge placement, bonding technique, composite placement, and finishing and polishing. This course aims to review the techniques for each of these steps based on current evidence.
Course objectives
Discuss treatment guidelines for interproximal caries and caries removal endpoints.
Discover materials and techniques to promote a long lasting adhesive bond and create a well-adapted restoration.
Analyze matrix utilization and contouring instruments to achieve a tight and well-contoured contact.
Review the evidence for different types of composite materials including flowble, bulk-fill, and heated composites.

6 CE Credits will be given for the day.
